Got a lot of photos? Do you want to be able to enjoy your pictures instead of having to search and search to find your favourites? Does the thought of tackling your photo collection seem so overwhelming that you keep putting it off? Me too!
That's why this month I'm hosting the 31 Day Photo Decluttering Challenge! Each day I'll share tips to help you declutter your photo collection so you can really treasure and enjoy all the best ones. And I'll share my progress as I declutter my photos along with you :)
Today's tip is to look at the ratio of face size to photo size and let go of some pictures with small faces.
Today's Photo Decluttering Tip - Declutter pictures with small faces
Have you noticed as you're going through your photos that the pictures you like most are those where you can really see the person's face? Or group shots where the faces are all close-ups? It's much harder to enjoy pictures where the people are in the distance and you can't recognize them or appreciate their expressions.
One of the 365 Items in 365 Days FB group members commented yesterday that in addition to the math I introduced for calculating how long you take to make decisions about your photos, she also considers the ratio of face size to photo size. Yep math helps you declutter :) If you're not a mathie, basically what we're saying is to let go of those pictures where the people are tiny compared to the size of the picture.
There are some exceptions of course:
- Very large groups of people (school photos, camp photos, etc.)
- Photos in front of landscapes or scenery
- Pictures in front of buildings or landmarks
In those cases you may want to keep the photos even though the faces are very small. But if the pictures are just distant and the surroundings are not particularly special or significant, consider letting those kinds of photos go.
My Photo Decluttering Progress
I decluttered one more album, including a package of negatives and 79 photos. Many of these photos were from camp days as well as photos of myself with various groups of friends. Some were taken at a distance without a flash so the quality isn't great. Those were easy to declutter. And I chose the best pics of groups of friends and let go of the rest.
The photos I decluttered from this album represented about 58% of the album, which brings my overall total to 52% of the printed photos I've decluttered so far. Another album of high school photos coming up tomorrow!
Your Turn!
Today your task is to look for pictures with small faces and consider decluttering them.

How are you doing in the 31 Day Photo Decluttering Challenge so far? How do you think today's tip will help you? Are there any other reasons you would keep photos with tiny faces? What photos are you decluttering today?
Happy decluttering and organizing!
